A hand painted barbotine earthenware plate designed by French artist Hervé Di Rosa for the Paris edition house Axis, signed on the reverse "Di Rosa pour Axis, Paris." Di Rosa is a leading name in France's Figuration Libre movement, with a cartoon-bright, comic-and-graffiti-influenced style often spoken of alongside Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf.
Raised, slip-trailed black outlines frame vivid hand-applied glazes in red, blue, yellow, green, and purple, forming a playful one-eyed character in a striped suit and purple shoes — all under a sunny yellow scalloped rim. Every design in this Axis series is its own little character, which makes each plate truly one of a kind on the wall.
Measures approximately 8" in diameter. Very Good to Excellent vintage condition — no true crazing, cracks, or chips; you'll feel a fine scattering of tiny raised specks across the glaze, consistent and characteristic of the handmade barbotine surface rather than wear.
